The Riddle

--A.F. McAllister

A wispy fog wrapped around Amelia’s feet as she stood—rooted in place. The pristine Spanish galleon rested upright in the center of the dense pine forest near Allegheny National Park in Pennsylvania’s interior. More miles from a large body of water than she wanted to calculate. She was intrigued. And terrified. Who or what brought this massive ship into the woods? How did it still look like it was brand new? The colours of the flags were brilliant and bright, the wood without blemish, the canvas crisp and white, and the windows were still intact on the nearly five-hundred-year-old ship.

She continued to stare, her mind spinning. Did she dare to move closer?…
